  • 1.  making costumes

    Good morning. I have two "dogs" as characters in my upcoming production. Anyone have suggestions on making a dog costume, or good places to rent/buy? We are using a prosthetic mask for the face/muzzle, along with makeup. Really need a body suit type of deal.

    This probably isn't going to be very helpful, but might be good for a laugh.

    When I picked up our drama club, I found some shredded bath mats, the long yarn kind with the non-skid back. All these pieces were pinned together with safety pins. I later found out, after discarding the two masses of mat bits, that they were the dog costumes a parent created for Nana in Peter Pan. I'm sorry to say that I laughed about these creations in front of the parent who made them. Perhaps, from the distance of the stage, they worked. But, oh dear.

    You could use an overly large sweat shirt and sweat pants of the same color - Simple, yet gets the idea across. Sew a tail onto a belt.  Then ears (on a headband) to go with the nose. The acting should make the part believable.

    Find a large stuffed animal at a thrift, or even from a cast member. Unstuff it and use the casing as the costume. I had a student do this for a children's production, and it worked really well!

    Why not turn the actors into puppets? Used mops can go a long way. I was reminded of this in a workshop this weekend- check out clips of Pig Pen Theater!

    Depending on the timing of your production, I wonder if any of the halloween stores will have anything?? We have one here that a good friend of mine made for another production. It looks awesome on and off stage. It looks like a large jumpsuit made out of fabric fur and a head piece in the same material with ears.
