I am trying to add a section on playwriting to some of my classes next year (mostly scenes / monologues / VERY short plays). Does anyone have a book they would recommend for helping me to guide the students through this process? This will be used for 6th - 8th grade students.

Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief by David Starkey has an amazing segment on writing the 10 minute play, as one of the four genres treated (creative non-fiction, poetry, and short-short fiction). I've used it with Creative Writing classes, but also with my Theatre classes, with some success. Highly recommended, and should work for the age range you're aiming it with a minimum of adjustment. They give several examples of 10 minute plays, which you might need to moderate.
