  • 1.  Adding Theatre Arts to My NC Teaching License

    Posted 05-30-2017 09:49

    Good morning,

I've been asked to add theatre arts to my NC teaching license after teaching it for 8 years. Does anyone have any suggestions for online classes that I could take to fulfill my requirements? Looking for online resources (community college, college/ university) so I can continue to teach full time and have a family. I have to take acting, directing, playwriting, theatre management and creative dramatics. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Do you have a full teaching license in something already?  What is it already in?

In North Carolina, so long as you have a full teaching license, all you need to do is pass the praxis II for the content area.  It's been a bit since I did my add on social studies license, but here's my experience as a NC teacher.

I got my teaching license in k-12 theatre ed eons ago.  In 2009 I added 9-12 social studies.  All I had to do was pass the Praxis II and apply for a license add-on.

I'm not sure how different things are right now.  You can check with DPI as far as the license requirements for teaching theatre.

It's not a matter of taking a few courses and the Praxis II in NC.  You'll need to go through a theatre education program.  UNCG is the only one I know of with an M.Ed.

There isn't a Praxis II test that NC accepts for Theatre Arts. UNCG used to have some summer classes - and an MEd. program. Josh Purvis is in charge of the Theatre Education program, jtpurvis@uncg.edu, I'd ask him.

I'm currently working on getting the few classes I need to add Theatre as an endorsement on my certificate.  I have been taking online courses through Regent University and I HIGHLY recommend them.  Once I complete my course work I will still need to take the Praxis II test as well.

I've enjoyed the classes I've taken from Regent and can already see a difference in my approach to teaching Drama and Musical Theatre - even after doing it for 25 years!!

    Best of luck!!

    Hi Robert,
Please look into the program we have at Catholic University called the Graduate Certificate in Creative Teaching through Drama. We offer online courses in the evenings during the academic year and the summer. This coming fall semester, we are offering the methods course--The Teaching of Theatre--and Drama in Education, Part 1--that encompasses Creative Drama. Both are online with synchronous meetings via web cam and microphones, so you actually interact with instructors and other students. Start with taking a look at our web site. You can also contact me at FLYNN@cua.edu if you have any questions.

In this 5-course graduate certificate program, develop new approaches for a variety of curriculum topics in K-12 classrooms or other educational settings using Drama as a learning method. Certificate students take five 3-credit graduate courses offered by the drama department-meeting either in-person on campus, or online.

If you plan to take course work outside of NC in hopes of getting theatre certification in NC, make sure the state has reciprocity with NC.

Word to the wise.  Every state has its own system.
