  • 1.  Addams family musical set ideas

    ​My name is Callum and I am the ASM for our schools summer musical of Addams family this year and was wondering if anyone has any ideas when it comes to Wednesdays torture rack that she tortures pugsley on. We don't have a lot of money as we are spending most of it on the ancestor costumes this year.

    We are also looking at ideas when it comes to the set as there is a lot of scene changes and a lot of them are when the curtain is open or in the space of a minute.

    Here's our "rack" from 2 years ago.  a 4x8 wagon with 2 flats on the back.  We built the rack in front of the flats out of 2x6s.  We incorporated a piece of PVC in the center for the the actor to "sit" on and used u bolts to mount a small bike seat to it.  The chains travel through pvc guides taking them into the back where a stage hand pulled all four at the appropriate time.  The shackles were larger PVC with a small slot cut to get them over his legs and arms.  I thought it was pretty effective.

    We built a wagon, created the walls, drilled the holes, attached the chains and had 4 crew members behind pulling chains. we flew in a window with bird attached with velcro.
    as for the main set, build a unit set and change locations with the use of different curtains in the arches and different furniture.
    bring in your travellers for several scenes, ie grandma wagon.
    also create 2 drops for nyc skyline 12x20 and family tree 12x20.

    Hi Callum,

    I used the ancestors to create Pugsley's torture. I bought some plastic chain and had an ancestor on each limb pulling while Wednesday was "cranking" downstage. I utilized recycled arches from other shows for the background in most scenes. Also, I used an ancestor with an ax to make the torture chair that Mal sits in. When Mal gets up and Gomez "pushes" a button/lever, the ancestor would let the ax drop in the middle of the chair! It looked great and utilized the ancestors for more scenes!
