  • 1.  Class Assignment for Production Roles

I am trying to come up with an interesting assignment to have my Intro to Theatre class learn what different roles there are involved in a full-scale production.  Anyone have anything interesting they would be willing to share?

I make a research project and presentation. Besides learning the basics tasks and responsibilities of that production and design, students also research a specific person on Broadway or from a  favorite musical or play.

We did Shrek the Musical, Jr. last year and there was a documentary on you tube- From page to Stage Shrek the Musical. It had several episodes- lighting, costume design, set design, etc.

We followed a very similar process and job shadowed from a far-research, rough drafts,  colored renderings on the big wall, process from page to stage as we designed and built the show. Very fun story- a student was having difficulty finding and recycling for a costume and asked if she could take her rendering off the wall so Mom could help her create her costume!

My kiddos were very successful. Wicked also has episodes to follow and I believe a set designer actually shared how he prepared and was hired for the set designer position for Wicked.

I have a PowerPoint with general info about the roles in a production (I have attached it here), and then they have to pick a role. If they want, they can find a person in that role on Broadway (they have to have a minimum of two B'way credits- that keeps them from just doing Hollywood people) or I can assign them one. Then they have to research that person and present it. I made them do a brief bio, talk about their work on and off B'way, and include a video (this was all via PowerPoint). The last thing they have to do is tell me whether they would want this job or not and why. It's interesting to see them learn about something besides just acting.

Would you mind posting the powerpoint again? When I try to open it, an error message comes up saying part of the file is missing.

    Thank you!

The American Association of Community Theatre (aact.org) has a pretty good section on the various job descriptions used in theatre, including a few suggestions for further reading. Unfortunately, it's buried in their web site menu system, so here's the link:

    http://www.aact.org/theatre-people

Also, the Internet Broadway Database (https://www.ibdb.com) has a HUGE amount of information on the theatres, the shows, the production staff for each show listed, and so on and on. A really fun place to look up stuff.

Grab a 1-2 page excerpt from a play (a two character scene works the best for this).  Create cards with the production roles you want to focus on (ex. director, actor, sound technician, light designer, etc.)- one side of the card is the title, the other side of the card is a BRIEF description.  Divide students into production teams (teams of 5-8 tend to work well).  Give each team a set of cards OR, if you are super-savvy, you can randomly distribute the cards that are color-coded or have stickers on them so students have to find their production teams.  Have each team read through the script TOGETHER, then tackle their role!  This can be done in one class period with a brief discussion afterward, or this can take an entire week where the students mount their mini-productions at the end.  It's incredible how different each scene is presented, even when each group has the same tools!
