Hi!  I have a student competing in the costume design category, the first time for our school.   Does anyone know what they mean by "Techniques used within the design" in the list of what must be included in the Artifact Binder?  Also any general advice would be very appreciated.  Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the various sewing techniques used (pleating, gathering, darting, ect)

I have judged on the state level, for advice...

Make sure all of the info is neatly and sectioned in the binder. Error on too much information, research photos and comments with the photos. List where the necessary costume pieces are determined from the script if necessary, include your realized costume production meeting notes if realized and rehearsal notes. Be complete on documentation for character per scene and quick change documentation, include pics where possible and fabric swatches.

In the presentation talk only about the process of the design... don't wander to I helped props, be clear and to the point on your design. Make sure that the student reviews the items definitely needed in the book and that they are all included at minimum. Also during the presentation it is nice to hear... the largest issue/problem encountered and how it was overcome, what was learned from the design, and what you want to improve upon in the process in the future.

Those are my 2 cents for what they are worth, good luck to your student

Great advice, many thanks!  Another question, what should be included in the one page design statement?

I teach a workshop at ITF called 10 Tips to an Exceptional IE. One of the tips for the tech student is to write out their presentation. That way the timing is right and it does not come off as rambling. The rehearse it as if it were a performance. This is a great skill, because when it comes time to present a portfolio to get a job the student will feel more comfortable.

The trick it to make this prepared and rehearsed presentation feel relaxed, warm and natural.

Best of luck to your student. Luck increases exponentially the better prepared they are..

    Julie,

I have been to many District, State and National Thespian Festivals to judge Costume Construction and Costume Design Individual Events.  I had to go back into the event requirements to research your question because I wasn't familiar with your wordage on the question.

*First, is this a state IE?
*If so, are there different requirements at your state level than Nationals?
     * Is this for a Junior High or High School festival?

On the National page there are no Techniques used with in the design on either event.  The Artifact binder is your resource guide on both events.  Even on the revised edition there are no requirements on this subject.

I would triple check your guidelines, if it does state a technique used segment, then anything in Costume Design ( which is only on paper not an actual garment) is presented in the Artifact Binder.  I would assume the techniques used are everything the binder requires.  My advice is to triple check all items required and to answer all questions asked.  Make sure the front of the boards are marked properly and readable.  Being proficient in the understanding of Costume Design is what the judges need to see and hear.

If you have any questions for me I would be happy to answer them, please feel free to email me at any time.

I want to thank everyone who replied to my questions, all the advise was very helpful.  My student used all the information you gave, her project turned out great and she will be going to Nebraska for the first time.  She is ecstatic!  Thank you all for taking time to help out others.
