As we are preparing for this year's banquet, I'm kind of stumped to come up with a clever theme.  We have done ghetto fabulous, the decades, cartoon heroes, but I'm stuck for this year.  Any ideas, friends?

We've used some of those ideas, too - "decades" themes for the 1920s and 1950s worked well.

On two different occasions our officers chose musical theatre - come dressed as a character from your favorite musical.  Another successful theme was Disney characters.

This year we'll be in a private room at an Italian restaurant, and my troupe co-director and I were puzzled when, at a troupe meeting yesterday, the officers revealed that this year's theme is - wait for it - pasta!  What, I'm supposed to come dressed as a piece of orecchiette or farfalle?  Shaking my head over that one ...

How about a Ren Faire or Shakespeare theme. It can be simple or elaborate. We did it every year as a fundraising auction for a Shakespeare Festival I ran for many years.

    Simple menu
    • Rustic bread scored to ease tearing of pieces; dipped in olive oil/balsamic vinegar
    • Fruit with yogurt/honey dip
    • Mixed green salad with lemon/honey/olive oil dressing
    • Grilled turkey legs
    • Broccoli almondine
    • Herb roasted baby red potatoes
    • Apple pie or tarts
Elaborate menu: this is about the number of courses and presentation.
    • Bread (see above)
    • Green salad: add edible flowers
    • Soup: vegetable soup with barley, mushroom soup, cream of asparagus
    • Fish course: chilled poached salmon with watercress/dill sauce, mussels and clams poached in cream, etc.
    • Meat course: roasted baron of beef, whole suckling pig, squab (game hens) stuffed with rice/date stuffing, mushroom stuffed chickens breasts, etc.
    • Vegetables: Cabbage was the most common green vegetable, broccoli, asparagus were considered exotic. Root vegetables were common, though  potatoes and sweet potatoes were introduced later from the Americas
    • Starch compliment: In addition to the root vegetables, barley, oats and rice were also used.
    • Desserts: Sweet pies and custards were the most common. Elaborate cakes and marzipan were served at the richest of banquets. Unfortunately, ice cream did not appear in England, outside the royal court, until the early 1700s and chocolate was not in common use for another hundred year, both well after the Elizabethan period.
There are numerous sites that offer Elizabethan food recipes. Adapt as needed.

Check out an interesting website of period recipes: http://www.godecookery.com/godeboke/godeboke.htm, in the left hand column click on 17th Century English Recipes. This is for reference only. The actual recipes are not very useful as there are no quantities, only general instructions.

    Bon appetit

Our students suggest and vote on ideas every year. From the ones I can remember off the top of my head they have done...

    - The Office
    - Emerald City
    - Peer Parody (dressed as one another from past roles peers have played)
    - Heroes and Villains
    - 80's
    - Broadway/NYC
    - Awards Show (like the Tony's, basically super dressed up and a chance to re-wear prom attire)
    - Disney

My officers always chose the theme for our banquet; sometimes it was theatre related, sometimes it wasn't ("Come as your alter ego").  My favorite by far was Disney characters; even the parents dressed up!  We held that banquet at Olive Garden and little kids kept coming into our room to talk to their favorite hero/princess!  We also did favorite characters from plays followed by favorite characters from musicals.  (We're on the road right now; I'd have to go through my scrapbooks at home to remember the rest.)
