Our Awards Night has been pretty lame the last few years, but the officers want to change that. We are looking for a voting ballot that someone else already has  created for both Oscar or Tony type awards and silly awards. They also want to present all the seniors with an award; some seniors have been invovled throughout HS; some just this year. Any feedback and forms, invites etc already created would be much appreciated.

There are a number of traditions we have for our end of the year awards. First, there are a handful of awards that I  give out: class awards (best Senior, Junior, etc.), best tech, best SM, best newcomer to the program, etc. Prior to the ceremony, the students will have voted Oscars-style on their "Dream Cast". I create a sheet with every actor and every role they played from every show we did during the year, including one-acts. The students vote on their top 5, regardless of gender or size of the role. The top five vote getters get a Dream Cast award. The senior students/officers are in charge of "Paper Plate Awards". Between them, they create awards on paper plates personalized for EVERY student who was involved in the program in some way that year. To be honest, it can take a long time during the awards ceremony, so I make sure they move very quickly during this part.

A group of seniors also usually makes a goodbye video to the underclassmen, and a group of underclassmen make a goodbye video to the seniors that we play at the ceremony. It's always a lot of fun.

We have "The Sammie" awards.  We dress up in our finest, put out a red carpet, and do it up. The parents serve the kids sparkling juice and fancy hors d'oeuvres in the lobby.  i invite guest speakers from the theatre community, and then we give out awards for actors and techies for each show.  There is a slide show playing the whole time.  Then we have an intermission where dessert bites are served and people mingle.  Act Two is where we do our ITS inductions.  We finish up with my presentation of The Sammy award, which is given to a senior who has made the greatest contribution to the program. That student makes a speech.

This year, since it will be my last year, the students have decided they would like to see me perform IEs, so they will "assign" me IEs and I will present them throughout the evening.

Two years ago, we started hosting a murder mystery party for our awards banquet. And I will host our third this year, due to popular demand.

We start out with the awards and the dinner, and then move into the game play afterwards. This gives the parents an opportunity to step out after the awards if they do not care to stay for the game.

The biggest downside:  the award portion is not very prestigious/formal feeling due to some of the "in-character" costumes the students show up in to play the game.  (It's hard to take serious an All Area Best Actress award when the recipient accepts it sporting a beehive and sweater portraying a 1980s counselor.) And I feel that the kids are there more for the game than the awards.

However, with that said, the humor of the night is sometimes just what these kids need. (And represents who they really are).  Leave the seriousness for the academic awards, and let the seniors have one last hoorah with their high school troupe, glittered with plenty of great photo opportunities.

My two favorite companies for large group mysteries are Night of Mystery: Home | Night of Mystery - Downloadable Murder Mystery Parties (favorite, but more pricey). and Playing with Murder: Murder Mystery Party Game Kits | PlayingWithMurder.com

We do an Oscar type evening at the end of the year that includes all three of our shows. The last two weeks of the Fall, Spring and winter I send kids a link to a survey planet survey (online and free). We do categories like Best Lead actor/ actress, best supporting actor/ actress, beat ensemble member, best dancer, best ensemble groups, best crew member, best student assistant, etc. I make categories multiple choice and survey planet tallies it all. At the end of the year we also do a paper ballot with Roomie of the Year, Sportsmanship award, and most improved.

Since it IS awards season, I encourage all our troupe directors to email pictures to members@schooltheatre.org. We love seeing them and sharing them with the staff. It's a great reminder of why we're here. We especially like pictures of students at the moment they're receiving their induction items and awards. Pictures of you or your administrator presenting students with items are great because we get to see the emotion of the moment even more than through group photos (which we still also love to see.)

While we're talking about it, we encourage everyone to use social media to share the celebration photos. Your students have massive networks. Why not turn them loose with great pictures AND have everyone use the same hashtags? Many people use something like #troupe1234 or #schoolnametroupe1234 as the formula for their hashtags. The key is to have everyone use the same thing every time. Think of the added awareness and recognition for your students and school! Brag about your students. They deserve it.

Thank you all for honoring student achievement in the theatre arts.
