  • 1.  New teacher needs some ideas for scene work

This is my first year teaching and I desperately need more ideas for scene work for my junior high and beginning high school students.  I don't have a lot, and most of what I have is really for more advanced students and especially for more mature students.  My undying gratitude will be yours for your assistance!

Don Zolidis has quite a few things that would work. Check out his website

I was just going to jump in! Thanks, Shira.

The scenes on my website are (mostly) clean and free to use. - You can print them, photocopy them, whatever you need to do. Almost all of them are from published plays.

(The scenes in the adult actors section are from more of my professional work, which is less appropriate for school.)

Playscripts also has a actor's scenes book, which works quite well.

I have two books that I like, both by Garry Michael Kruger. (50 Professional Scenes and More Professional scenes) I've used them for years with high school beginning students. They are a nice variety of comedy and drama.

I have used "Scenes That Happen" and "More Scenes That Happen" by Mary Krell-Oishi.

I inherited a program that left me very little performance material, and with over 100 drama students I need to have a good amount of variety. My biggest advice: ebay! I bought so many books for dollars. It takes time to look through them, but what I do is tag the good ones and make copies. I then bind those copies in a number of duplicate 3 ring binders. That way I know every piece my students have access to is worth doing and is appropriate for what we are doing. If you have books on hand and simply let students "find" material, you have to double check every kids choice.

Check out Theatrefolk!  The authors right specifically for middle and high school and there are many great options.  Look at the vignette plays by Lindsay Price - Wait Wait Bo Bait, The Snow Show, Hoodie, - there are many more!

    Wishing you the best!

Here's some Open Scenes.  I use these through the semester.  They start out very raw and terribly acted, but as we continue and they learn more they start to get very creative.  They are easy to learn and very open to interpretation.  I've attached 1, 2 and 3 and I have more if you are interested.  Good luck and remember the first rule of teaching:  stay one lesson ahead of them and you'll be fine!

    Cheers,

    Valerie
