  • 1.  Needing Suggestions for a Musical

I am in a bit of a pickle. I had already selected Aladdin, Jr. as my spring musical (we are a small-ish high school; we do both Jr and full length shows), but have been informed that one of the programs we are involved in (Orpheum High School Musical Theatre Awards) no longer accepts Jr shows. So I am in need of suggestions! I have a 2 seniors I really want to showcase - male tenor and female alto. They are very active in school and community theatre shows and can handle pretty much anything. I have a few more pretty talented kids younger than them (male and female), then I have some very green, but showing promise, 7-8th grade girls. We have a moderately large stage, but literally no wing space. There is about 2 feet between the side walls and the stage. Anything brought on has to fit through either standard size doors on either side, or a double door that is behind my cyc. Unit sets are our friend. Our auditorium was built in the 1930s, so while it is beautiful, I am very limited. I also need to be able to purchase an accompaniment cd. My tenor is begging for "Bonnie and Clyde", but there is no way we could stage that in our space, with our students, and I really prefer kid-friendly shows so that I can invite our elementary and middle schools to matinee performances. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you so much for the suggestions. It's hilarious because Charlie Brown, Into the Woods, and Annie are literally the last 3 musicals we have produced here!

If you have a soprano you could do Aida: School Edition. I did it several years ago with a pretty small cast (for a musical)

You will find most Rock Musicals the lead male is a tenor and the lead female is an alto. That's just unique to the genre. You could try Footloose or High School Musical, both of which are family friendly and both of which have tenor leading men, alto leading ladies, and can be done with small bands and unit sets. If your Alto can belt Mezzo, Little Shop of Horrors is a wonderful small cast musical and a huge audience pleaser. If you've got the dancers, Anything Goes has a male tenor lead (Billy) and female alto lead (Reno) and a simple set (I did it with the deck of a ship and two small wagons representing small cabins/state rooms.
    Good luck!

Big Fish would be great with the kids you're talking about! You might have to get creative with the set- but I think you could mostly do minimal set- and let props be your friend. Or you could consider using projections. We have used them twice (Elf Jr and Mary Poppins). They were great!! And I know they have them for Big Fish.
