  • 1.  5-week intensive musical theater class? or other ideas?

There's a recent great thread on teaching an Evolution of Musical Theater class, and I have a follow-up question.

Our school teaches 4 classes/week in 85-minute blocks. Do you think I could reasonably teach a wonderful Musical Theater class as a 5-week seminar with 4 85-minute classes each week? or would that be way too cramped?

Alternatively, can you think of other academic classes that might do well as a 5-week intensive?

I'm also teaching a 10-week Multicultural United States Theater class in the Fall semester, and a 10-week Shakespeare class in the spring semester. The 5-week intensive pairs up with those classes time-wise, but it doesn't have to relate content-wise ... or it could! Like, Shakespeare I for 5 weeks, and Shakespeare II for 10 weeks. or Theater and Social Change for 5 weeks, and Multicultural US Theater for 10 weeks.

    Thanks!!!

Improv would be an incredible performance class in this schedule. I also love your Theatre for Social Change idea!!

Having taught some musical theatre, if you have more than 10 kiddos in the class, I think you would run out of time in a big way in a 5-week seminar; 28 hours don't go very far when you're looking at the acting, singing, and dancing. If it were a survey style course, then the 5 weeks would be ideal. Or if it were focused on one or two aspects of musicals, like Musical Theatre: The Ensemble Experience (many choral numbers, some limited dancing, and little acting but lots of harmonies) or The Dance Experience (and focus on different dance styles in ensemble and solo dances or something). I also have a huge challenge in musicals at my school because the vast majority of my students don't read music, so learning kusic takes longer....just a few thoughts.
