If it is a film MAKING course, your main focus ought to be on camera movement, with a secondary focus on script writing. Kevin Smith showed us back in the day that a good script can overcome mediocre directing. The CineFix channel on YouTube is a wonderful source for insight on all aspects of filmmaking (IndyMogul is a good one as well, but if focuses on DIY techniques).
As for structure, I would have them adapt a two person scene from a book or, better yet, a comic book for built in story boards; just ask Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen.) and then act it out with other students filming with iPhones. One kid can get the wider shot, another two can get over the shoulder coverage and another two can get close ups one each actor. You could then have each person in the class do their own edit pass and compare (or make it competitive...a film festival as it were.)
Sorry don't have time at the moment for more.

Subject: New HS level Elective Course in Film
I was asked to create a new 11th grade elective course which will likely meet 3 days a week for the entire school year. I've come up with the below course description but now I have to prep this course! I'm seeking suggestions for source materials- both written and on film , books, and any other resources anyone can suggest.
How would you structure this course? What would be on your syllabus? Help!!
"Directing and Acting for Film"
Students will study famous directors and their favorite actors (ALFRED HITCHCOCK & TIPPI HEDREN,
- QUENTIN TARANTINO & UMA THURMAN, LEONARDO DICAPRIO & MARTIN SCORSESE.) Students will view their films and analyze the director's and actors choices. They will learn the basics of film making and acting for the camera while crafting an original short film. Course will culminate in a "Movie Premier" where films will be viewed- to be followed by an actor and director talk back.
