    Hi!

I am the music teacher for a small private school on Long Island, grades 1-12. Part of my job has been the creation of a musical theater program in the high school, now three full years in existence. We have done so far You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, Little Shop of Horrors, and In the Heights.

Im looking ahead to the next few years and am currently torn between Addams Family and The Wedding Singer for what will be a group of about 25 die hard students who have increasingly strong dancing chops and already excel in terms of singing/acting. My question is: I k ow having read a libretto that there is a lot of stuff in The Wedding Sing that is considered questionable. Even having just done Heights without any script edits (even for language) I still have concerns about this particular script. Is there anyone out there who has put up this show in a school setting who I could talk to about their adaptations? Thank you so much all!

Hey there! Just did Wedding Singer two years ago. Great show. Knowing both In the Heights and this script, I can't think of anything that is more racy in the Wedding Singer. However, we also did Rent: School Edition with no complaints. Not sure if we are the best litmus test for appropriateness.

I would contact MTI! They may have a list of approved changes in language! I know they have that for other shows!

The Addam's Family is an absolute blast!!  I actually sold out my last two performances - the first time ever for me!  I highly recommend this show!

25 die hard students who have increasingly strong dancing chops and already excel in terms of singing/acting.

That was MY high school in the 70s and 80s.

Choose what best suits the actors you have. Not necessarily the trendiest scripts. It is OUR responsibility to lead our students to productions that do not present obstacles for their learning. Do not compromise your students to build a resume. THEY trust you to do what is best. Do not betray that trust. Be their advocate. MANY high schools perform "The Wedding Singer" -- is it the right show for YOUR community?

If you are concerned about inappropriate content, consider that Wedding Singer might be great if you directed a youth theater group. But a SCHOOL generally has a code of conduct and certain guidelines. We must act in a responsible manner and make choices consistent with what is already expected of students. And must be careful with adaptations . . . there are legal limits on just WHAT or HOW MUCH can be adapted. What WE do instructs our students. I don't answer to my administration about my choices before we produce . . . and I don't want to answer to them FOLLOWING the show, either.

My very conservative district did this show a few years ago with no cuts, and it's often cited as the best musical the high school has ever done. Jut for anecdotal evidence of its appropriateness.
