I also teach filmmaking at my school. Does anyone else on this forum? I am specifically looking for ideas for short films (around 10 minutes), either on YouTube or other online resource, or as a DVD collection that I can buy, that I can use as examples for my students in class. A lot of short films I stumble upon would be considered R rated, or are just not the kind of example I want to show- due to the portrayal of alcohol, drugs, language, sexual content, adult themes, etc... Anyone have some great resources in this area?

Also does anyone know about an organization similar to this one (EDTA) but for filmmaking? Something that might have a similar online community forum and/or an education conference like the EDTA conference but for film teachers? I am fairly new to teaching this curriculum, and don't know hardly any other high school film teachers.

    Thanks for your help!

I have asked EdTA to post the IE Film winners from each year's Int'l Festival. I go to the talk back each year and it is so instructive. Most of the films are truly excellent and I wish my students could see them as an example of short student films.

American Film Institute had a training for teachers called Screen Education to bring visual literacy in classrooms. Contact them to find the handouts, lessons. I used them alot, as I also taught Film. I took the AFI training. It was wonderful.

One of their trainers now does consulting: Frank Guttler. Easy search for him.

    Have fun.

    Hi!

teachertube.com is an awesome resource for the teacher of filmmaking! Here is just one example that will help your students better understand the type of shots you are talking about in your curriculum:

I've been teaching film-making for many years as an artist in residence for the Illinois Arts Council, and just landed my first full-time teaching gig in high school - drama! I'm so excited! My students have won awards with their work in the past. Please note that cameras may have changed since this film was made (the baby in the movie is my own then 8 week old daughter, now 15!) but the story is classic.

I hope this helps you on your quest!

    Sincerely,

You might want to contact a local college with a good film program.  They could be a good resource in many ways. For instance, my son is a film maker and in college they would screen their films at local schools or supply a digital copies of their work.

Check out the 10 day film challenge, its a fun project to work on and they usually have examples of past films created on the web site. Students are given 10 days (in school only) a name, a prop, a genre and a line which they must work into the movie. They shoot edit create posters etc. within the allotted time, its crazy but lots of fun. They don't have one in VA (yet) but there is a multi state challenge maybe that would be open to you.

Check out the 48 Hour Film Project website, you can watch tons there, all between 4-7 mins. Here are their featured ones:

Featured Films @ 48 Hour Film Project

Clicking on an individual city and then "watch films" will give you a bunch more from all over the world:

    2016 Tour @ 48 Hour Film Project

These are really fun to watch because there's a variety of experience levels represented and some incredibly creative ideas.
