Ms. Zena's Z-battical!

As some of you know, I decided to jump off the cliff last summer.

I resigned an amazing Theatre teaching position.
I sold my house.
I gave away all of my possessions.
I joined the Peace Corps (departing for Mongolia on May 29, 2014).

OY!

Yes, I must be crazy.  But if you know me, then you would probably say this does not surprise you.  If you don't yet know me, you will...and the same conclusion will eventually also be yours. :)

So, I don't leave for Mongolia until late May.  And I'm the kind of person who gets antsy sitting in one spot for too long.

Thus, until I depart, I've chosen to spend some quality time visiting high school Theatre programs across the US and professionally develop myself in a way that I have always dreamed.  The plan:  To see how amazing Theatre teachers teach by observing them.

My journey started in Portland, OR & will traverse a LOT of states (hopefully California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin - I think I just learned how to spell all of those!).  My hope is that I will be able to spend time mostly with high poverty schools that have managed to grow & foster successful Theatre programs despite (or even because of) socio-economic challenges.

I don't know exactly what this journey will bring me...better educational understanding? a sense of best practices? new ideas and approaches? affirmation that what we are doing so incredibly impacts kids & communities? hiking in every state? amazing new friends?

I really don't know.  But I am excited to find out.  And I hope you will be here for me to share what I do find.

I am in awe of your courage Zena. Not surprised, but in awe. When you publish your book based on this adventure and your blogs (PLEASE do that.) you'll be able to educate many more people about the magic that theatre brings to everyone's lives. See you when you traverse Ohio my friend.
