Hello, all! We are trying to select our fall play, and a top choice is Shakesplosion! by Andrew Geha. For anyone who has done it, do you have thoughts on the following?

-What age range would you recommend for performers? Our drama club includes middle school as well as high school.
-Will students with limited Shakespeare knowledge enjoy it?
-Will families with limited Shakespeare knowledge enjoy it?

    Thank you for your help,
    Laura

My program is also combined middle and high school and neither students nor community are Shakespeare-savvy. We did "Shakesplosion" four years ago. Kids had a blast. Whole audience enjoyed it and those who did know Shakespeare found it hysterical. Pacing is key -  that and a good combat master!

We did it in 2021 with grades 7-12.    Younger students generally played the smaller roles, except we cast Henry VI as a very short 7th grade boy, which was a lot of fun.

The students and the audience had a great time with it-- I had a lot of students tell me they wished they had auditioned after seeing the show.  The humor is universal whether you know Shakespeare or not.  The histories were the hardest to block, but ended up being the funniest part of the show.   Have fun!

I am so glad that I saw your post and thread. I am a teacher at a 6-12 school starting a new theatre program. I am wondering what shows work well with such a wide gap in ages. Good to hear that Shakesplosion worked well! I have a copy of that and will check it out.

If anyone has more suggestions- please post or send me a message. Looking for plays and musicals. :)

This year we did A Simpler Time for our play and Into the Woods, Jr. for our musical, and both were fantastic!
