  • 1.  Need good dramatic 1 man 1 woman scene. Help.

    Posted 10-26-2023 16:50

    Hello,

I am in need a of a powerful dramatic scene (for 1 man & 1 woman) with emotional range for a couple of my really strong senior performers. We are looking for a competition piece that is preferably a little lesser known (but not required). Both of these students have a wide range and can easily bring strong emotional depth to their roles, so we are also looking for a bit of a challenge too. If anyone has any suggestions we would be forever grateful.

    Hi there,
I and You by Lauren Gunderson is packed with fantastic two person scenes. Doubt, has plenty to dig into. A Doll's House 2 is another.
I could add more, but look into these great plays.

I used a scene from Anne of a Thousand Days (Anne Boleyn and King Henry) from Dramatist several years ago. It was a very intense and dramatic scene. However, in looking through their catalog now, it isn't available anymore so it wouldn't be eligible to do now with the new guidelines. Which is a shame, it is an incredible scene and has so much to work with for the actors, plus they were very into the historical aspects (and would be even more so now with the musical, SIX.)

You could look at "Bang Bang, You're Dead." The scene between the protagonist and his one female friend (sorry, I've blocked out the names) is very powerful.

There are some great two-person scenes in the play "8 Minutes Left" by e.b. lee published by Stage Partners. It's all about people in a small NJ town dealing with the end of the world (hence the title). You can read it for free at the publisher's site.

Bellwether by Steve Yockey. There are some great scenes with the husband and wife, and the husband and a neighbor. The play itself is great - a six year girl mysteriously disappears and the husband and wife soon become the main subjects in the eyes of the community.

I would also recommend Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson. A great two-person scene between Henrietta and Peter.

    Hey!

I have SO many to suggest... DM me if you want to talk more.  My all time FAVORITE scene for this- perfect length- so emotionally charged but reserved... Scene 3 of Betrayal" by Harold Pinter... when Emma and Jerry meet at the flat to end the affair.  OH!  With the exception of one "f" word  (which I change to "screwing" in class... or just don't say it- let him cut her off and say "No, for loving.")- it is THE perfect scene- IMO.

Have fun!!  I LOVE this part of the process!!

Tuesdays & Sundays by Daniel Arnold and Melinda Hahn. It's a longer piece (45 min) but very powerful and great for senior performers.
