Hey everybody.  I hope you're having a great end o the week so far!

I have another question regarding music licensing.  I'm starting to plan next year's high school season and would like have one small performance with a medley of Broadway songs performed by the students.  Has anyone had a production of a few songs from different Broadway musicals?  If so, how did you get the rights to perform the songs?

    Thanks,

I spent hours on the phone one year asking those questions!  Eventually I was told that it was treated like a "talent show" and that if we purchased a karaoke track, that was all we had to do. It wasn't all Broadway shows though.  Not sure if that was or is correct, but after literally spending hours on several different days on the phone, I wrote down the names of the people, the company name, and the date and time of the call in case I was questioned about it.  Never was.

My understanding is that getting the rights for your kids to sing songs from shows is pretty easy/affordable (ASCAP, BMI, etc.)...but as soon as you put them in costume or use the dialogue to set the scene, it's now a performance of that musical, so up to the company that licenses those shows. Much trickier and expensive.
