  • 1.  Moving fabric

    Good morning. We are doing Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses and my student designers had an idea of some kind of mechanized moving fabric for the pool or even just a portion of it. Any ideas for a simple way to build something like this where the sound of the mechanism doesn't drown out the voices? Thanks in advance for your advice

    My two cents - 

    Because of the nature of that play - I would suggest actors moving the fabric. Or crew. They can be a part of the world.

    Hi, This is one of the oldest and easiest ways of making water that actors or dancers can wade or swim in. Lengths of really lightweight fabric are laid on the stage parallel to the proscenium, and people grab each end with hands outstretched and raise and lower their hands repeatedly. The air goes under the strip of fabric, traveling across the stage, making gorgeous waves! Each separate piece of fabric sends the waves across at different intervals so it looks like lots of waves! The higher and lower their hands are raised the bigger the waves. Kind of like shaking out sheets to make a bed, but Better! Have Fun!!
