Hello!
I am working on a monologue unit for some of upper elementary students.
They are all boys in a special ed program and for the most part are pretty engaged and can use expression.
The problem is that for some of them their reading level is extremely low. Doing simple improv activities or other theatre games has been a nice equalizer to unite the class so far this year but our issue is going to be more apparent in this scripted work.
In Reading classes for special ed they have books designed to be content that's interesting to a 10 or 11 year old but is at a 1st grade reading level. It's nice because typically stories for these students reading levels geared towards kids younger than they will dismiss and disengage. I'm not sure if there is a similar thing in theatre for scripts or monologues?
I've taken some classic monologues from online or from the Don Zolodis universe and have taken out or replaced big words and tried to pair down so it's more accessible but still the funny situation that the student might like. But other than that it can be hard to find good rep for some of these students.
