I have looked back in the forum and there are a lot of ideas about how to have a knife stick out of an actor on stage and even ways to stick the knife "into" an actor very quickly. However, has anyone ever come across the need to have a knife pulled from an actor's back after they expire? I am not having any luck or inspiration coming up with a method.

We did it with a face down actor, the knife placed between the upstage arm and chest. Luckily in our scene there was a moment when the actor knifes the other in the back and helps him down to the ground. With the right staging in a proscenium set up it looks real.

Knives Out! How about a retractable knife? Lots of options on Amazon. See attachment.

DO NOT USE A RETRACTABLE KNIFE!!!

It is my understanding that every fight choreographer in the world will tell you not to use a retractable knife. The reason is the following: basically all retractable knives are cheaply made toys and therefore are extremely unreliable. Therefore someone goes to stab someone else, the blade doesn't actually retract and someone gets hurt. It gives a false sense of security.

I would not use the retractable knife in a fight, but for  your purpose of pulling it out of a performer which is dead and not using as a weapon, it is a very good alternative to putting something more solid on the performer.

Joseph is right - retractable knives are NOT suitable for stage use.

this could be done with a retractable knife and installing a catch to hold the handle in place when the knife is in

When I did "But Why Bump Off Barnaby?" I had this issue.

Barnaby suddenly appears on stage, then keels over face down on a table, revealing a knife sticking out of his back.

I started by open up the center seam in the back of Barnaby's suit jacket, about 1 inch. I then sewed a pocket into the back of his dress shirt. In the pocket i loosely sewed a small pair of vice grips.

When it was time to pull the knife out, the actor put her right hand on Barnaby's back (apparently to steady things) then grasped the knife with her left. She then released the vice grips with her right hand. Then, to replace the knife, she just reversed the process, closing the vice grips on the knife after sliding it back through the cut seam.

It took a little practice, but it worked perfectly.
