  • 1.  Junior MTI musical materials and time frame question

I am planning on doing a junior musical this year due to time constraints.  If you have done one before, how long do you get to rehearse, and when do the materials come in?  The contract I received had no information on this.  I know for full musicals you can purchase more time and they send the materials by a certain date, is that the same for junior musicals?

    Hi Sara,

Having lots of time is one of the definite advantages of MTI Jr shows.   You don't have to return any of the materials, they are all yours to keep (students keep their librettos, just as they get to keep their scripts for a non-musical).  Although you tell MTI your performance dates, the license actually permits you to perform the show as many times as you like for one year, I believe.   We've also worked with Junior musicals from R&H (now Concord?), and the procedure was the same.  Tams Witmark was different, but that may have changed since they merged (also now Concord?).

I typically order materials right at the start of the school year, even though we don't usually audition until November.  The materials usually arrive within a week or two of me sending a scan (or fax) the PO number to MTI.  The musical director loves having extra time with the score to prepare.

    Hope this helps!

Yes and No to the "perform it as many times as you want in a year". This only applies to the middle school level. When we had a mixed 7-12 cast do Aladdin Jr, we had to pay a different higher rate rather than the $600-$695 as well as account for the number of times we wanted to perform. Looking back at my records, we paid just over $1000 for three performances and the Showkit. Definitely more than the junior price but absolutely less than what we pay for our usual musicals. We did get the materials shipped almost as soon as we paid. It's a great deal for all it includes.

Once the contract is complete and paid for, they usually ship the materials fairly quickly. You do not have to return the Showkit, so there's not really a limit to rehearsal time.
