  • 1.  How far in advance do you determine what play you're going to do?

Hello, all you experienced drama teachers out there!  For those of us who are new at this, how far in advance do you figure out which play you're going to have your students perform?  For example, do you figure out the Fall production over the summer or before then?

Most years I'll have all 4 shows (2 Main stage, 2 TYA) chosen in time to announce at end of year awards. The last couple years I've just announced Fall, and announce Spring shows after strike of the Fall show.

I start thinking about shows shortly after we finish this year show. After our fall play I will look at plays for next fall. I usually make a final choice in January or February so that I can get the license and advertise it in the "playbill" for the spring musical. About 3-4 weeks after we close the spring musical, the music teacher and I start working on next year's musical choice. We usually announce that in May after we have signed the license.
