  • 1.  Fun Show for Kindergarteners/First Graders

    Posted 14 days ago

My Advanced Drama class will be performing for the Kindergarten and First grade classes from our feeder schools. Any suggestions on a play that is under an hour and has a flexible cast of at least 20? I'm looking for something comedic - the sillier the better!

    Ken,

Sounds fun! This is a collection of short shows using lighthearted stories the kindergartners may be familiar with: https://peoplelikeusdoc.com/free-resources/#flft

I would suggest MAGIC THEATRE - rights are held by Dramatic Publishing. It was always a favorite of both my students & elementary students K-3. Though written for 7, you can easily split the roles - my entire advanced class would do it! Very flexible casting & rehearsals, with some "all" segments & some you can assign to smaller groups. Fun & imaginative with some simple songs included. We toured with it more than once - it was very successful!

Pioneer drama has some great options.  We performed for the kindergartners at our feeder school earlier this year and did Bedbugs.  Cute easy show with large ensemble style cast.  They also have some classics like Alice in Wonderland  and Peter Pan that are under an hour.

"The Mother Goose News Hour" is a fun choice for a very young target audience.  The script calls for a cast of 19 but it can be performed with a cast of 20 if the part of the ANNOUNCER is divvied up for 2 performers.  The script can be purchased either directly from the publisher, YouthPLAYS.com, or from Amazon

Here is a screenshot that has the Synopsis as well as feedback from a school that performed the show:

Our lower school students enjoyed the production of Hey, Diddle, Diddle (adapted by Marilee Herbert Miller, available from Dramatic...) our MS students put on a few years ago.  It is a great ensemble piece for actors to create innovative staging and transitions.

"Olyander Rabbit Moves to the Rain Forest", as well as a (shorter) one-act called "12 Little Green Goblins".  Written by... moi (back in the dinosaur years)!  I see they're both still available on Amazon (who knew!).

I directed one production of "Olyander Rabbit" with a second grade cast, and another production with a middle school cast which toured the local elementary schools.

I don't ask any royalties, but please send me photos or a video if you produce one of them!

    RE: OLYANDER RABBIT

There's one version for 13 actors and one version for 28 actors.  Either version can be adapted to any number of actors by combining the lines, or splitting the lines, of different animals.

    Here's the synopsis:

A rabbit named Olyander comes to live in the tropical rain forest. Two animals; Mac, a macaw and Lemmy, a ring tailed lemur, do not want an "outsider" coming to live in their forest, and they plot how to "convince" Olyander Rabbit to leave, but each plan back fires, harming only themselves. From this they learn several important lessons:

    a. acceptance/tolerance of people who are different than you / who are from different cultures
    b. don't be mean to others, it will only backfire on you in the end, and
    c. make up your own mind if you like someone, despite what some of your peers think

There is a surprise "interracial" marriage proposal at the end and everyone lives in harmony for ever after. The play also teaches flora and fauna of the tropical rain forest.

    RE: 12 LITTLE GREEN GOBLINS

    The synopsis:

This one-act children's play, sure to entertain children and inspire adults, is a comment on society. 12 Little Green Goblins move to a new lush planet, only to "permanently plasticize" their world in their greed. Is there any hope for their Green New World?
