Hi everyone! this year we are adding a cabaret-style evening starring our 9th and 10th graders to get them a little more stage time. They are coming up with material on their own, but one of our wonderful English teachers who is helping with this said it is starting to feel a little like a talent show. We realized it'd be a lot more cohesive and interesting if we had an MC or some sort of connective tissue between the pieces. Ideally the MC would write their own material and I think we would do that in future years. However, this is our first year and we are a little short on time (I'm busy with the musical and this other teacher is new to this). Was wondering if anyone knew if you can purchase material like this from any of our amazing licensing houses.

Would also just be interested in your experience if you've done something like this before. Thanks for any thoughts!

I am working on the same thing for our high school. We will be having 2 MCs. I too am hoping that they will write their own material, but was looking for a fallback plan. How did you make out on yours?

Hi Mary - I struck out :). I found nothing useful online or at least nothing that provided an MC scaffolding or skeleton that we could then add our pieces to. There were some that included songs and an entire script but I was not interested in that (nor my students). In the end, the MCs wrote their pieces. We limited it to 3 or 4 moments rather than throughout the entire show and it was a bit of work to get them to hone their bits. But in the end it was worth it - they had fun and the audience did as well. Hope that helps!

When a local Theatre teacher was retiring, all the students wrote a similar style show to honor her as she left. They titled it "Back to the Costumes."  The premise of the show was that a few students were trying to organize and pack up a large costume closet for storage. Throughout the sorting ordeal, certain memories would pop up about the shows and songs that went with the costumes. This allowed for those numbers to be performed.  It was a simple set with a few main characters and a huge ensemble that would come out to perform each number.  The lights would dim on the actors and costume racks and ensemble would be in the spotlight.  Was easy to stage and a flexible idea to accommodate any musical numbers.  At the end the teacher came in to see if the task was completed and the finale was " For Good" from Wicked.  Not a dry eye or person not giving a standing ovation in the house.

If you are looking for a similar type show in the future "A Night Before Christmas: Christmas Cabaret Concert", I have attached a copy of the script to read, a link to all of the songs is located in the title page of the script.

A classic traditional tale of Christmas day, modernized for the non traditional ways of today, with 17 original seasonal songs in our array.

We start the musical sleigh ride rockin' down the highway of our memory lanes, with wide open eyes of a child viewing presents,

pretty lights, snow angels and candy canes.

As we round the first bend of these holiday scenes, our sights are now set on what the season truly means, when love takes over

your heart and soul, bringing you the child of your dreams.

Then the checkered flag is in sight as we head out of the final curve to finish our night, putting the pedal to the metal to those

blurry lines, as we speed back to the future of these frantic rapid changing times.

The holiday season does end with the drop of the ball, but when it begins now-a-days is anybody's call?

A holiday musical for any stage. Probably the most stress free musical you can produce. Economical to stage, no pit needed. Up to 14

lead/solo roles plus ensemble roles. Most roles can be gender neutral. Sponsorship opportunities built right into the script for

added profits. Family fun entertainment for all ages. A great holiday musical theater or show choir production.
