Are most Forum members teachers at public schools?

  • 1.  Are most Forum members teachers at public schools?

I'm just curious about the members of this Forum.  Are most folks drama teachers at public schools?  Alternatively, are most people drama instructors through Parks & Recreation or other afterschool type programs?

-Private school here, grades 7-12 with about 200 students total in the school. Coincidentally, I attended a public school of the same size.

True title 1 rural public school here with about 300 HS students, about 30 of them my "theatre kids." Because we are small, and a super conservative county, a lot that we do is more like private school. But having to run off them public school funds, which is $0 for me!

Public school teacher here. Theatre is about 25% of my instructional time, and I run all of the afterschool theatre activities.

I am a retired school music and theatre teacher, who also taught musical theatre classes in an extracurricular theatre school. I now own a college consulting company in which I work primarily with students who are interested in studying the performing arts in college.

Some of us are members of the high school theatre community as a whole.  I myself am a former high school theatre manager, and I am now a high school theatre operations management specialist, and also a lighting designer.  I have online courses for drama teachers, as well offering a free newsletter and other resources on my website.  My newest service is helping vocational students who might be interested in working in theatres on cruise ships(!).  I only offer lighting design services in the Boulder/Denver area.

I know we're not meant to overtly advertise on this forum - and usually I only chime in when I read a post where I think I can provide some help and advice – but you did ask…. ;-D

    Kind regards,
    Beth

I teach in an Independent school!

Like many others here, I was a thespian member in HS.

I'm now a "retired" K-12 teacher who taught at both private and public schools, IATSE stagehand, Equity Stage Manager and former touring Broadway professional.

My main job is now as Training and Development Manager for a major live events production, integration, and design company that serves international clients ranging from the Super Bowl and gigantic music festivals to simple venuerenovations. Part of that is support for HS and college tech theater teachers.

During the summer, I teach the Technical Theater for Performing Arts Teachers classes through University of Wisconsin - Madison, a program I founded 4 years ago and which just keeps growing. This summer there will be classes in audio, rigging, and props.

I also led the group that wrote the standards for technical theater K-12 in Wisconsin, and am active as an advocate for performing arts education.

And my favorite thing is when I do some consulting work and many webcast/podcast/guest lecturer/keynote events - related to theater safety and technical pedagogy. https://www.theaterhealthandsafety.com

I had no idea the wide variety of roles that people in this theatre Forum perform.  Thank you so much for opening my eyes!

Public school teacher at a 7-12 building. I teach some theater during the day as well as World Languages and Careers and then direct all our after school productions! Our school has about 500 students and I average around 40 in our productions.

I spent 38 years as a high school theatre educator. Now I supervise student teachers in the Theatre Credential program for CSU East Bay, work with performing arts teachers to clear their credential in the Induction program for California, coach the The Claremont College Mock Trial team, and teach workshops all over the country. Plus, serve on many boards and local political campaigns.

I believe in sharing all of the great ideas I've learned from my theatre mentors, so please reach out to kristacarsonelhai@gmail.com if you need help in the areas of fundraising, strategic planning, recruiting, community outreach, or running a program. Happy to help.

I think the majority of professional members, on paper, are probably public school teachers and/or private school teachers. There are also some retired teachers/emeritus members who have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share.

However, some of the most active members of this forum are not current school teachers, but rather teaching artists and/or professionals that work with educational theatre in some other aspect and that is one of the many reasons I value this forum so much. I can't express my gratitude for their support and for so freely sharing their experience. It has often guided or refined my teaching practice and I have learned so much from people like Kristi, George, Beth and so many more. It also makes me feel connected to a larger community, which can be difficult when you are the only person in your building who has any experience, let alone teaches, your content area.

I retired after teaching in public schools for 35 years.  Early on, I taught English and Drama, later transitioning to full-time Theatre Arts.

I taught in both rural and urban high schools, with student populations from 700 to over 2000, and spent 2 years as part of the 6-member team that opened a Middle College High School with just over 100 students on a community college campus.
