In addition to all my other musical selection challenges, I've just discovered that next year I'll be losing any class time I had with all my students together. Scheduling after-school rehearsals is a NIGHTMARE because my students are from multiple school districts that all have different schedules for sports, fall shows, competition one-act, etc. There is no way I can get enough group rehearsal time to pull off a traditional, full-fledged musical. Plus, I only have 12 students (one guy, two non-binary, and the rest girls) and no ethnic diversity. I'm going to need a vignette-style show (something like Forbidden Broadway or Songs for a New World) that can be rehearsed individually or in small groups and calls for minimal group choreography. I still want to challenge them and encourage them to make strong acting choices, so any revue-type suggestions need to have good opportunities for character creation. Please share your ideas! (Worth noting, this does NOT need to be a big name draw piece -- we're quite used to doing material off the beaten path.)

    Thank you!!

I have my students present a beginning of the year solo in class that they feel represents their "level" and 'Type". This allows me to see any growth they have had over the summer. After we share a critique session and apply a few exercises to augment character or staging, I will ask them to list all solos presented and seek out a "theme' for a revue they might be in.
We then loosely script and link together these songs and some may become trios or duets or ensemble pieces for a 30-40 minute revue.
Its original work and they know the music for the most part already! Of course we may add a group number that pulls the whole theme together that a student suggests.

Past revues have been "High school reunion" or "Searching for Love"......
    It really is fun!!!

We just finished “Most Likely To: the Senior Superlative Musical”. Very funny writing by Michael Tester. We chose it because of the many monologues & vignettes since we were virtual. I highly recommend it!
