Here is how we break down the honors:
Induction - 10 points
Chord - 40 points
Stole - 80 points
National Thespian - 120 points
International Thespian - 180 points
- academic honors are awarded for students with a high g.p.a. and look different than the straight thespian honors. We get blue chords and stoles for straight thespian honors and the blue/gold twist with a white stole for the academic honors.
To earn points students receive:
1 point for walk on roles, seeing a live theatrical performance, set building (per every 3 hours), House for one-acts or improv shows
2 points for House during main stage performances or ensemble roles in one acts
3 points for featured roles in one acts, all stage crews for main stage performances and stage manager of a one act
4 points for leads and student directors in one acts, crew manager positions and ensemble in main stage productions
5 points (these only usually happen when students do not receive full points in a main stage production for making inappropriate choices), attending the Central AZ Festival of Theatre (which occurs on a Saturday)
6 points for assistant directors and assistant stage managers
7 points for featured roles in a main stage production
8 points for leads and stage manager in a main stage production and for attending and competing in the 2 day State Thepsian Conference (Friday and Saturday)
10 points for students directing a main stage production (this can only occur the spring of their senior year and only if they have stage managed at least 2 shows and assistant directed at least one main stage production when I am directing.
I award points for special circumstances as well. I've had students fully produce small performances on campus and I award points on an individual basis depending on how well produced the show is. I have never awarded more than 4 points for producing a small performance.
I also do not guarantee that students will receive full points. I will, and have, pulled points for not completing all of their responsibilities. We did Les Mis this fall and the kid who played Enjorles and the assistant director both lost 50% of their points because they left tech to go see a concert. They were also removed from any participation in their senior spring show. It was a definite learning experience.
I have students who achieve International honors; not often, maybe 1-2 year and they are INCREDIBLY involved in both my department and local theatre. I also have at least 10 kids this year who will not receive all of their earned honors because they didn't put in the point request (which we do online) by the deadline.
We then have awards that are given through the ITS troupe and (except for 2 specific awards) are chosen by the VP and Pres of the troupe for the year (and they may not choose themselves). These are:
Most Dedicated (male and female)
Technical
Most Improved (male and female)
Up and Coming (male and female - underclassman only)
MVP
Bear Paw for each class (our mascot is a bear so there is one person recognized in each class as being the best example of being a thespian in their class - they cannot receive one of the awards listed above)
2 "special" awards:
Veteran - chosen by me and they must have been in the department all 4 years (I choose this based on personal and artistic growth and their work in the program throughout the entire 4 years - especially when they do not get cast in a show or have a major disappointment)
Grandma Schwartz - chosen by me and my mother (aka Grandma Schwartz) and there is no specific length in the department required (so students who didn't find theatre until their senior year) and is the person who is the best example of what a thespian is in the entire school. This is a very special award because she makes an original teddy bear that showcases their most important moments in theatre. Last year it was given to my top tech kid and the bear was dressed in all black with a rainbow flag and had a bag that had a Sherlock Holmes book and the Monty Python and the Holy Grail dvd ( our season was SPAMalot (she was stage manager) and she student directed a Sherlock Holmes production)
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
