There's another issue with
The Children's Hour, and it's fresh in my mind because two of my students performed the last big Karen/Martha scene in class yesterday, and I brought this up for discussion after the performance. Many gay people today have a love-hate relationship with the play, appreciating that it was considered progressive - even shockingly so - in its day, but also seeing that it falls into a whole pack of older plays where gay characters are only portrayed as miserable, unhappy people who end up committing suicide, being murdered, or being institutionalized. Sensitive handling, however, can still make it theatrically effective, and such plays are historically important as a necessary interim step that led to today's more varied and diverse representation of gay characters onstage.

Actually, I now remember that only one of the two women in "The Children's Hour" is a lesbian.
