Other than plexiglass, what do you use for window panes in large window flats?

I have used clear plastic from fabric stores, I have stapled this to the back of the opening, it is on a roll.

Depending on if they need to be practical or not, we also use clear plastic shower curtains and stretch them to simulate glass.

Unless we need panes for some design necessity, we don't use anything; we just leave them open.

I have used those weatherproofing kits you can find at the home improvement stores.  It has a heat-shrink plastic and double-sided tape.  You tape the plastic in the window, then use a hairdryer to shink the plastic until it is taut.

A really viable "old school" simple solution is to use cheesecloth dyed black and stretched over the window frame.  From the audience's viewpoint (and actors on stage) it looks just like glass - and its totally replaceable and cheap.

If you look in the photos here you can see the windows in use - another benefit is no glare!

I typically leave them open unless I need the glass surface for some reason.

I also leave them open unless I need them. If required I usually use a form of clear fabric. The type varies according to what the cost is at that time.

Annie for years we have used 3 mil vinyl for our windows.  It is easy to use and put up with a staple gun, and is light weight.  it can be stretched and looks like real glass .  You can get it at most hardware stores and JoAnne's fabrics (if you have one in your area).  It is also pretty wide.  I have gotten 54" and 60" vinyl.

I love the look of illusion -- the really fine net that has a bit of sparkle to it.  You can buy it in any fabric store that carries prom or bridal material.  It weighs nothing, and it looks good under lights.  I just staple it to the back side of the window.  If you need to see both sides of the window, trim off excess net after stapling and add wood or composite molding.
