Searching for MONOLOGUE PLAY

    Hello Theatre Teachers,

I'm looking for a monologue play to use for my Acting Class.  Contemporary.  With monologues for all genders.  My class can be the first time performing for some of my students who come from many different countries and backgrounds.  We currently us monologues that are not part of a play, and I would like to deepen the experience by having the connection that a play provides.  We spend 6-8 weeks working on contemporary monologues.  Any suggestions?  Thanks so much!

You could use an Anna Deveare Smith play.....Twilight:  Los Angeles 1992, Fires In The Mirror, or Let Me Down Easy.

My first thought is Spoon River Anthology but it's not super interesting, IMO.

I recall French has an anthology called the Bully Plays that has a monologue play in it.

I just did The Swing of the Sea by Molly Hagan this past year.  While not entirely monologues, there are many long ones in it, and it is well written and perfect in the middle school/high school context.

Jane Martin's Vital Signs has a few pieces for males, but most of the monologues are for women.

These are vignette plays that have scenes and monologues:

Peter Dee's Voices from the High School/Voices 2000

Brad Slaight's Class Action and Second Class

I'll third Anna Deveare Smith - her plays, especially Twilight and Fires in the Mirror, are the gold standard: lot's of different voices, lots of complexity, lots to research in order to understand the characters. Those plays and characters will certainly prove a challenge for your students. If the class is mainly younger students, I might think twice (but you know your students, so they might be up for the challenge). If it more experienced and mature actors, then definitely consider them.
