Hello Carolyn,
Our sister school did the show and used a simple projection for the chalkboard. For the cake, they had one for each night. There was a hole in the desk that the cake sat and the actor , while eating some of the cake, pushed the rest down the hole into a bag. Essentially a cake trapdoor. Very effective.
