Large cast, female heavy musical suggestions

    Hello Everyone,
It's that time of year again.  Looking to do a large cast, female heavy musical next year on our main stage.  The stage was made ADA complaint last year and now extends over what used to be the orchestra pit and also has a ramp downstage center that extends well into the house.  I'm looking for possibilities to utilize that to great effect.  Pics are included.

I also have a bit of a prodigy in one of my females so something with a star making role would also be great.  I am perusing a few ideas but thought I would put it out to the forum since I had such great success with Little Women:  The Broadway Musical  which was suggested to me on here.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    John

You might try looking at one of the versions of Cinderella, Legally Blonde, Aida (if you have enough boys), Annie (not a fan but lots of females), Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray (again, if you have enough for casting), or Jane Eyre. It really depends on what your possible casting looks like and the style of show you want. I tried to give a variety of options

We decided on Disney's The Little Mermaid for next year because we have an abundance of girls and it's a great show for training up some boys who are less experienced.

Others we were looking at were Sister Act and Freaky Friday.

I work at an all-girls school. We just performed, "Mamma Mia." It was a great star vehicle for MY female prodigy--She played Donna.

When I saw that ramp, I immediately thought "Gypsy".  It has at least two really strong female roles (three if you include Dainty June).

Our school just finished "Back to the 80's and it was absolutely amazing! 26 songs in one show, all 80's music needless to say, and those ramps and stage set up could be a lot of fun in a "rock concert" concept.

Do you know the show QUILTERS? It was first produced on Broadway in the mid-1980's and was a popular choice in regional theaters throughout the 90's because it is only women and has flexible casting. I've seen productions with just 7 or 8 women and some with as many as 20. I've not heard that much about it lately and it doesn't have the name recognition of some of the other shows suggested, but it does have some great music and minimal set requirements (though the costuming requirements might be tricky). I would at least check it out.

I highly suggest Emma! A Pop Musical... known songs and loveable roles and two very strong female leads. This is based on Jane Austen's novel Emma, which was also the inspiration for Clueless the movie. This musical is a very clean version of Clueless.

Thank all for the great suggestions.  I'm now talking to the boys choir and several are interested in participating.  So that means I can now have a more balanced cast.  With that said, any other suggestions.
    Thanks again!!
