I am having trouble finding someone to build cubes.  There is a lack of space so I have to be creative.  I can do a lot with the cubes fir class, rehearsal, and production.  Any suggestions?

If you are at a high school, try your woodshop teacher.  I purchased all of the materials; he had his students build them. Our theater students did the painting.

Wenger sells "Stage Boxes" of various sizes. They are durable and sturdy, and a good investment.

Here is the link to the theatre section of their catalog. Scroll down to page 112.

Valerie, I believe Wenger discontinued that product a few years ago, a fact that I am constantly sad about because we use the ones we have a ton, and I kick myself for not having acquired more while they were available.  They are extremely useful, flexible, and durable.

Thank you all for your suggestions.  I have tried our wood shop and our engineering department.  One person took the old time dresser (heavy) removed the drawers and put a piece of wood over it and told me to use that.  I will have to keep searching.

Where are you located? We have a fantastic carpenter who does all our cubes. I'm sure that, in your area, there might be a handy-man type who could work something out. Not sure shipping would be worth it for cubes. Can't imagine how much that would cost! Might be worth reaching out to parents/community members who might just know someone who does wood-working or constructions. We also looked at some Plexiglas- cubes at one point. Certainly not as sturdy but if you're desperate - maybe a placeholder?

Three years ago, I needed some boxes with a hole in the middle to support a pole but, like you,I have very very little storage.  So I came up with a design that would allow me to fold the boxes more or less flat when not in use, by use of hinged sides.  As a result, I have SIX boxes that are two foot cubes but when collapsed, they occupy as much as space as two boxes.

They are made from half inch plywood, so they can be painted a billion ways, are light enough to be carried by one person and are strong enough to support large adult actors standing on them.  My first design had cupboard handles on two corners.  This is now being upgraded to have a handhold cut in each side of the box.

The lids have bracing so that when placed into the box, they hold it all firm, and the hole in the top allows them to be popped off easily.

If you want any more details, just let me know

    Rob

Isn't there an article from Dramatics that had instructions on building cubes?

I believe the attached article from 2009 may be the one you're referencing.
