  • 1.  musical with few male roles

Our school is short of male singers this year and we are looking for a musical that might have several female parts but only two male singing solo parts.  Does anyone have an idea?  We have three or four more guys who might sing in a chorus but are not capable of singing alone.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We are doing Freaky Friday for this very reason.  There are 2 male roles who have solo songs, but lots of featured female parts, beyond the mother/daughter who switch bodies.

Unfortunately, we struggle to get kids to be involved.  They are in our chorus and featured chorale group - but don't make the transfer to the stage (despite the choral director being a part of our production staff).

SMILE... by Howard Ashman and Marvin Hamlisch... lesser known and rarely done, but it's a good show and a GREAT show if you have a lot of girls you want to give opportunities to but few boys.  The support materials for the show are very poor; or at least they were six years ago when we did it.  That's a frustration but overall I'd still throw it out as a good and unique option.

A great big thanks to those of you who have sent suggestions for musicals with few male parts; I really appreciate your help.  Good luck with your productions.

    Mame
Moby Dick (the head mistress is supposed to be in drag but maybe it could actually be a female)
    Quilters
No No Nanette (lots of lead women and the songs for the two guys are pretty easy)

    Hi Neal,

As a follow-up to Jared Wright's list, when faced with a similar problem in 2018, Thespian Sponsor, Donnie Bryan (Ensworth School, Nashville, TN), asked for permission to adapt the original 6-women Off-Broadway version of BEEHIVE for a larger, mixed high school cast. Donnie's cast had 8 "Beehives," who were the lead female soloists, and a chorus of "girlfriends" and "boyfriends." There were 25+ in his cast, but the show can be performed with as small as 8 - 10 girls and 1-3 boys.

I attended Donnie's production and was so impressed with the adaptation done by Donnie, his daughter, Rachel and the team at Ensworth, that their adaptation became BEEHIVE School Edition
