Does anyone ever have their students present speeches on famous playwrights? If so, do you have a rubric? Thank you!

Not speeches, but we've done "great playwright" projects, which I assigned to the students in pairs.

Part one was doing some research and creating a poster about their playwright, which they presented lesson-style to the class.

Part two was to find and prepare a two character, two-to-five minute scene from the work of that writer, and perform it after teaching their poster.

I'm attaching the rubric, if it's at all helpful.

This is great! Would you be willing to share any materials you give to the students? I plan on using this idea before the year is out!

Sure - here's the assignment sheet I gave them to set them up. Let me know if you have any questions, and (of course) feel free to tweak according to your need.

Do you have a list that the students choose from?

I compiled a list of possible playwrights they could use, yes, but they didn't choose them. I put the names into the Urn of Destiny (I have a beat-up old spittoon we use to draw random partners and projects) to randomly assign playwrights to the students.

    Among the playwrights I assigned:

    • Eugene O'Neill
    • August Wilson
    • Henrik Ibsen
    • David Mamet (had to be really careful picking scenes, of course)
    • Wendy Wasserstein
    • Noel Coward
    • Oscar Wilde
    • Tennessee Williams
    • Arthur Miller
    • George Bernard Shaw
    • Sam Shepard
    • Neil Simon

What other names would you use? It's been a couple years since we did this project, and it's ripe for a repeat.

I like the urn of destiny!

If we go all-american, I might add Thornton Wilder, Edward Albee, and , on the more recent side, Suzan Lori Parks, Sarah Ruhl (though one of her plays could be problematic!), Lynn Nottage and Tracy Letts.

Thank you for this! I might end up doing this will all three levels this year.
