  • 1.  Obtaining music rights

Does anyone have a contract with a company for music rights for play performances?  I usually avoid using popular music as pre/post show or even music within a production; however, I have a student who would like access to a song for his Student Directed One-Act.  I'm curious on the cost and effort it will take to make this happen.

I've noticed that there are Public Rights Organizations (PROs) just for this purpose, such ASCAP.com, BMI.com, and SESAC.com.  Does anyone use one of these groups?

    Thanks!

Are you in a traditional school? I teach in a Charter School, and spoke with my admins about paying all 3 companies, because if you use music at dances or for shows or anything, you need to get the rights to that music. It's the same as getting the rights to a play or musical. The school should cover that cost, though. Hope this helps....even though it ain't cheap!!
