  • 1.  BMD Projections StagePlayer vs. ProPresenter

    I will be using projections for the first time from Broadway Media Distribution. 

    They give two options for downloading projections; StagePlayer for the iPad and ProPresenter for mac/pc. However, you can only download one, and once you do, you can't change it.

    Does anyone have any experience with either?

    We used ProPresenter (PC) for our BMD projections for Big Fish last year. Expensive software, but easy to use. Loved BMD's projections.

    For clarity, the "ProPresenter" software is one of several playback options that BMD includes with the rental of projections (iPad, Mac, PC and ETC Lighting console hardware also available). The playback itself is free from us during your production! We make sure that all of the content is pre-cued to the licensed scripts, thanks to our partners Theatrical Rights Worldwide and Music Theatre International. 

    Our projections licensing fee is set up in a really unique way. We provide a percentage of revenue to the authors/representatives of the musical (providing a royalty for their original creative work), compensation to the artists who created the projection art, a licensing fee for the software and to the rest covers operating expenses to support the projections and our customers.

    Great question! We want you to have an incredible experience with our projections. Here are the industry leading software choices available to you as part of your projection rental license:


    (1) Easy: StagePlayer (iPad): An iOS iPad app that runs shows of all sizes, StagePlayer is reliable and features a simple design for intuitive and easily controlled playback. Once downloaded on your iPad, the operator has the ability to edit cue order, duplicate images and videos, edit timing and more! When you're done designing, you can run the projections by simply pressing "CUE". If you select StagePlayer, there are no additional software requirements, you can login on the iPad with your login credentials to download the Show Content directly to the app. An official Apple Playback Adapter is required to connect your iPad to your projector. This is a very intuitive software that provides the simplest form of playback. Edit cues, remove content, re-arrange scenes all from your iPad. 

    (2) Intermediate: ProPresenter for Mac or PC. This software allows for detailed editing of animated slides and the ability to import your own projection media. ProPresenter has a vast amount of tools to control projections and edit the color saturation and contrast of images, and adjust timing as-needed. With ProPresenter, you will need to adjust screen settings on your computer to recognize a second output and turn off "mirroring".     (3) Advanced: ImageCue for ETC Lighting Consoles. ImageCue is a compact image server that provides control of projections with twelve channels of DMX512 via n ETC Ion Lightboard. The ImageCue is shipped to your venue and due back within 3-days of your last performance (return shipping not included). ImageCue gives you full RGB mixing control of the background, and the color mixing can also be used in the foreground to tint images and videos, and full dimming control is provided for the output. ImageCue provides the power and elegance to display projections from your DMX512 ETC Ion lighting console, without the complexity of a media server.
