Introduction to Theatre Arts Teacher's Guide: A 36-Week Action Handbook by Suzi Zimmerman an effective textbook to use as a foundation for my beginning students. There is quite a bit of Theatre History selections that are manageable for English Language Learners, and of course you can supplement as needed. It also has a lot of improvisational activities, resources, and small scenes that are helpful. There is also a second edition which I have not used, but you can also look into that one.
