Is there any form of industry certification for technical theatre like there is for Microsoft, etc?

The ETCP certifications in rigging and electrical are the current industry standard.

    Hi,

The only certifications available are the ETCP certifications that Dave mentioned. Please note, you likely lack the requisite documented work hours to sit for the exam but they might take into consideration educators who have taught a tested area of expertise.

The masterclasses that Ken recommended are of great value and reasonably priced.

You can gain certificates taking the USITT eSET tests found at:

Again, these are certificates and not certifications but a step in the right direction if you are trying to demonstrate competency within the industry.

    Thanks,

    Dana

    Hi Dana.

Can these exams be taken by high school students? Here in Colorado we're looking for some certificate opportunities for students who complete CTE pathways in the performing arts cluster and we're at a bit of a loss to find them. I'm not sure if these exams are for teachers or if high school seniors can take them as well.

    Thanks for your guidance.

That was my question, too, about USITT.  It looks like a great program, but is this all ok for high school students?  With the emphasis on certificate programs, this might make out tech theatre program more appealing and appetizing to our students and administration.

PRESETT.org has online certificate courses in theatre management and stage lighting, which both teachers and students can take. Like Dana said about other courses, "these are certificates and not certifications but a step in the right direction if you are trying to demonstrate competency within the industry". You can check them out at http://www.presett.org/onlinecourses.html

    Hi,

At present, eSET is geared toward recent college graduates and/or entry level technicians. We are developing
a high school version of the test that will cover most content areas. The plan is to roll this out next spring with beta tests
this fall. The hope is that it will be used by those states that have HS CTE.

Anyone can take the Basics/Safety test (it is free). It is challenging but doable.

    Thanks,

    Dana
