    Target Audience

The Ed.D. in Educational Theatre is designed for individuals who intend to pursue leadership positions in the practicing professions, preparing candidates for senior positions as principals, superintendents, arts administrators, researchers, curriculum developers, policy analysts, educational consultants, and theatre practitioners.

    Program Goals

Through a broadly designed and individualized curriculum, students in the Ed.D. in Educational Theatre will develop their artistic praxis and the leadership skills needed to transform today's learning communities in a variety of educational, cultural, and vocational contexts.

The Ed.D. program emphasizes collaborative and practitioner-based study, providing comprehensive research and artistic training that equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to have significant impact in the worlds of educational theatre, arts policy, and practice.

In particular, students will develop authority in one of three areas of specialization:

    • Drama in Education(i.e., studies in drama/theatre curriculum, special education, integrated arts, assessment and evaluation)
    • Applied Theatre(i.e., studies in community-based theatre, theatre of the oppressed, the teaching artist, diversity and inclusion)
    • Theatre for Young Audiences and Play Production(i.e., studies in acting, directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, dramatic literature, arts-based research methodologies)

As a culminating study, students design and conduct a practitioner-based study under the direction of doctoral program faculty, developing a project drawn from one or more of the program's specializations (as listed above) and are encouraged to complete their program in five years.

    How to Apply

Applications for the Ed.D. in Educational Theatre are accepted from candidates with demonstrated interest in practice-based research. A satisfactorily completed master's degree is expected prior to application along with a portfolio of work demonstrating arts based research credentials, professional arts experience, and leadership in the field. This is interesting to read. Thanks for using EdTA Community.
Would there be a possibility that the program become even more accessible to a practicing Theatre educator by giving credit for innovative years in the classroom and the rehearsal world; plus Summer study along with online assignments which could be completed at the educator’s residence, rather than requiring the employed educator to leave his or her present teaching assignment?

Thanks for responding, Gai - and hello from long ago! I used to teach at North Hollywood High School and had a number of interactions with you at DTASC from 2006-2009. Also, one of our faculty members has used The Student Actor Prepares as recommended reading in her Acting: Pedagogy course - so you're never far from my thoughts.

As to your questions - Unfortunately, NYU Steinhardt does not offer experience-credit for courses (as of this writing, they don't accept transfer credit for doctoral study - hopefully that will change in time) - but here's what we do offer for a quasi-distance learning model:

We have a master's program organized specfically for working teachers - the Educational Theatre in Colleges and Communities Summer-only program. Details on that are here:
As for the aforementioned EdD program. summer study would be possible - but with a few caveats as students would be required to register for something during fall and spring as well, given that it is not really meant to be a summer-only program.

In the summer term, you could take 12 credits of Educational Theatre courses. Then, during fall and spring, you would have a few options:

    1. You could do independent projects as independent study or practica for credit during the fall and spring
    2. You could pay to maintain matriculation during the semesters that you are not taking courses - which runs about $500 per semester.
    3. While our program does not currently offer online courses, we will in the near future - and doctoral students are also able to participate in the Inter-University Doctoral Consortium - whereby our students can take courses at a number of partner institutions - and a number of them have online courses (like Columbia Teachers College) - which would enable students to continue research, education, or human development coursework during fall and spring. Information on that facet of the program is available here: https://gsas.nyu.edu/content/nyu-as/gsas/academics/inter-university-doctoral-consortium.html

Additionally, all doctoral students participate in a doctoral collegium once per month, but accommodations have been put in place for this for students who are away. This is usually not taken for credit (paired with the maintenance fee) provided that you are registered for something else in fall and spring (an actual class, independent study, or practicum) - though you could also take it for 1 credit and use that to maintain matriculation (albeit, for a higher tuition cost).

So there are ways - we are nothing if not flexible!

    Best,

    Jonathan
