I am a student in the Santa Clarita area looking for a sound/lighting tech for a play this summer. It is unpaid, for experience only.  Does anyone have recommendations for websites/forums to post the job listing?

    Tech week is August 5,6,8,9
    Show dates August 10,11,12

May I refer you to the following recent post for a list of places to advertise a position:

    Looking for a TD

Your post title says "techs" and your post only mentions a "tech". So, I'm not sure of your intentions, but a thought about one tech versus two techs:

Usually it's a funding issue when theatres look for one superhuman person to run lights and sound, but as this is a volunteer position, may I recommend that you will get better qualifications if you can find two separate technicians – one for lights, one for sound.

I've rarely worked with a lighting tech who had any interest in, or understanding of, sound (myself included – no clue what those sound techs are talking about!). And the same for sound techs, (recently an experienced and prolific sound technician whom I've worked with for years commented to me, I don't know why anyone would want to do lights!) When I have come across someone who could do two or more specialties, they were clearly more competent at one specialty and somewhat lacking in an innate understanding the other.

Yes, I have met a few people out there who are adept at all aspects of tech theatre, but sound and lighting really are two separate specialties, and even two separate mindsets, and all of your play participants deserve the benefit of specialized craftspeople and mentors.

Not only will you get better expertise, but two volunteers – each working in the area they are passionate about – will have better experiences themselves, and not feel taken advantage of with the level of work required to meet the expectations of two jobs.

Here's to an awesome production this summer!
