I have used the movie as a companion piece to the novel
The Outsiders, to talk about characters who act as a bridge between differering groups of people.
I've also used it with
Romeo and Juliet to talk about the timelessness of a good story and as a primer for creating the students' own adaptations of classic stories.
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but hope it sparks an idea.

Subject: West Side Story Lesson Plans?
Looking for some lesson plans to teach "West Side Story" as we are hoping to honor Leonard Bernstein's 100 birthday. Leonard Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, so we are excited to make the connections local! Does anyone teach this? How do you teach this show?
