For our final production of the year we are doing The Hobbit.  It is student directed. The student is doing an amazing job. As we work on the piece we are having difficulty creating the illusion that Bilbo is invisible. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work with the actors on creating that illusion. Exercises or general ideas are welcome!
    Thank you

This really is in the way the characters around the invisible character respond and act.  I recommend utilizing off stage focus for the characters who are talking to the invisible character and placing the invisible more upstage.  The invisible character may look directly at whom they speak to but clearly not the other way around.

You can try moving objects with fishing line,  have local speakers placed about for vocals.   Have him wear the same clothing but all in grey and move about the stage normally, it's the other actors reaction that will create the illusion of invisiblity.
