  • 1.  Play that takes place in a gym?

    I'm searching high and low for our play next year and have just found out that our musical Spelling Bee will be in the same space following it only 2 weeks later.  Anyone know a play that takes place in a school or gymnasium/auditorium?  I'm trying to repurpose as much of the set as possible. I originally wanted to do a modern 90m play for a small (8-10) cast but am open to any suggestions.

    One play that comes to mind is The Sparrow, which is available from Dramatic Publishing. It does not completely take place in a high school gym, but some scenes do, and the other settings could fit in, I think.  Amazing script with lot's of technical challenges opportunities. However, I have not produced it yet, because I don't think I could get it past my school board, so you might want to check on acceptability for your community.

    Look up the play RUBIES.  Takes place in a gym. Story of coming of age in 1st act and 2nd act is 20 years later at reunion. Female heavy -- if I remember correctly it's 4 to 6 women and 4 men.

    "The End of the World (With Prom to Follow)" by Sean Abley (Playscripts) has a number of gym scenes and with imagination and only a couple of other pieces could easily be produced in a gym. Large ensemble cast that is mostly gender neutral.
