  • 1.  PD for Theater Arts Teachers

    Posted 02-17-2017 07:29

I am interested to know how your districts approach Professional Development for teachers who have licenses from the state in Theater Arts/Drama K-12. Currently, I do not have any PD opportunities offered by the county that pertain solely to the content of theater arts yet my district expects all my PD to be in the content of my licensure.

Are there any of you that have faced this similar issue?

Or, are your districts approving PD in other content hours to count towards the renewal of your license?

For the sake of the conversation, I am not licensed in English or any core content. It is solely in Theater Arts grades K-12.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

In Kentucky the local school system determines how and when you get your PD. Our county system, JCPS, offers PD sessions and also allows us to set up our own. There are some PD sessions I have to take (Giving Students Medication) since I take students on field trips. I usually get my credits during the summer. I have taken classes at NYU, the Broadway Teachers Workshop, Dell Arte School of Physical Theatre, and Shakespeare's Globe in London. This year I'm taking a mask class in Atlanta. And since the PD credit is required in my contract, I can deduct the expenses on my tax return. I end up spending a week in NYC, seeing shows and taking it off my taxes!
I have been referred to as the Workshop Guru or the Workshop Addict. Whatever!

Can you make me a guru? LOL
Seriously though, I would love to see what else is out there. I will look into all you mentioned.

Have you ever gotten credit for non-theatre PD that has been accepted?

Can you do online training? Theatrefolk has an online Drama Teacher's Academy that has hours of PD, plus lesson plans and all sorts of other stuff. And then you can do your PD in your PJs!

For my district in Texas we have to do 12 hours of PD outside of our contract hours. How we get them is up to us. This year I went to the Texas Thespian conference, and Texas has a theatre teachers conference every year called TETA Theatrefest that I also went to. I only get credit for the Saturdays, but the Saturdays are all I need. Over the summer I'll be going to Instructional Rounds training, and that will count for 2017/2018.

My state counts attendance at the International Thespian Festival toward license renewal and PD, but not to move on the payscale. There is much offered for teachers at this week-long event.

Brittany, in my school district, I can apply in advance to receive professional development credits for events that I normally go to anyway.  (If that baby in the picture belongs to you, the summer PDs might be a hardship.  I remember.)

    1.  I have received PD credit for turning in a program from our NC Thespian Festival with the events I attended and watched highlighted.  (I'm sure some of our NC teachers probably get PD for attending the workshops along with our Thespians, which we allow.).

    2.  We have a professional organization here, the North Carolina Theatre Arts Educators.  We have a Fall Sharing and Winter Focus each year.  The Fall Sharing features master classes on Friday afternoon and a whole day of workshops by teachers on Saturday.  The Winter Focus is a weekend retreat that focuses on one subject.  I've received PD credits for both.  We've had teachers from bordering states attend our Fall Sharing to satisfy PD requirements for their states.

    3.  I could get PD by highlighting a program from the International Thespian Festival, with prior approval, but I haven't needed the additional PD credits.

Key to getting my school district to approve these events as PD was explaining that I cannot get job-specific PD through our district PD opportunities, and theatre PD is essential for my continued growth as a theatre educator.  I am the only high school theatre teacher in the district.

Brittany - you may also want to check out actingteacherstudio.com

Like Drama Teacher Academy it offers online PD, but I prefer actingteacherstudio.com because it's more affordable and offers a multitude of master teachers teaching various topics through video lessons. Each one is only 10-15 mins long, so I can fit them in my busy schedule and the master teachers are people whose books I've been reading & referencing for years.
