So next spring, my current school will celebrate it's 50th Annual Spring Musical and while I have a pretty good idea as to that production, I was wondering--- what other titles folks would likely choose for production in such an auspicious year.

We typically produce two main stage shows, one being, the spring musical and two other productions of various one acts, Shakespeare adaptations, an evening of one acts etc. each season.  So we have three other slots for production next year and I think it might be fun to hear---

What titles would make up your dream productions in such a year?

I got to have my dream season this past year: "Rent" in the fall and "Into the Woods" in the spring, with "It's a Wonderful Life" as my Winter Play.

Honestly I would pick shows the same way I always do. The anniversary would be more of a marketing tool.

What else do you plan to do to mark the occasion?

    Good afternoon,

I have to agree with Mark. Let the 50th year of the program be the marketing. As far as the show, pick one that you know will pack the space.

    Rob had a great idea.

When our program celebrated our 50th anniversary we produced The Diary of Anne Frank, the first show our department department produced in 1963. We invited the original cast and director and used the reception after to announce a capital campaign for a theatre renovation.

My Thespian president designed a beautiful 50th anniversary pin which we still give out to school board members, alumni, and those who contribute to our program.

What about the top plays done 50 years ago.  Look at Tony winners from 1969.  Such as 1776;  George M; Promises, Promises; The Great White Hope.  Or 1968 with plays such as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead; the Happy Time;  Plaza Suite; Hallelujah Baby; The Birthday Party; The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

    Just a thought.

Break a leg and may all your theatre seats be filled,

Of course the choice depends on many factors, but I would look at West Side Story, Les Mis, and Fiddler. You might also revive the first musical performed at your school 50 years ago.
    Best wishes!
