  • 1.  Summer Musical Theatre Camps

    Dear All,

I have some students interested in some musical theatre summer camps. Does anyone have any recommendations for reputable camps in the NYC or LA area? Or where I can find some information? Much appreciated. Thank you!

There is Open Jar Institute in NYC that I personally and professionally have had great experiences with. My friend went for their Residency program, but they have the Broadway Intensive for high school students and incoming college freshman!

I was about to recommend French Woods in upstate NY or Interlochen in Michigan for a full summer experience, but I see you're looking for NYCity.
Open Jar is in the city, and has a terrific reputation. Shorter sessions, though, I believe. Worth checking out.

If travel location can be more flexible, a lot of universities (like CUA below) have summer programs for high school students.
Middle school programs are going to be much harder to find...
    Good luck!

I recommend your looking at Camp Bravo. It is a week long process based Theatre camp held in the mountains near Angeles Oaks, California. Middle school and high school students do theatre from 7:30 am until 11 pm each day. It is a safe non-competitive environment in which students immerse themselves in the aspects of Theatre. The courses are taught by Theatre educators and working professionals. Some weeks the curriculum is comprised of students writing their own musical, stage combat, dance, virtual theater, improvisation, devised theatre, acting, playwrighting.
Counselors who have gone through the program are with the students guiding them.
    Check out Camp bravo.org.
