  • 1.  License holders for individual songs

Can anyone give advice on how/where to get permission to perform an individual song from a musical in a school assembly or showcase? Does one go to the publishers of the musical (e.g. MTI), or to something more general like ASCAP? Thanks for any insight!

We researched this topic when we wanted to do parodies.  We talked with a lawyer, researched court cases, and looked into the copyright rules about parody writing.  Everything we could find ruled in favor of the parody being legal.  But I'm not sure that is what you are trying to do.

Here's a great resource:  Broadway Musical Home - Production Rights.

    Cheers!

You can find collections and single sheet music here http://www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/vocal-music.jsp

It really depends on how you want to use it as to what license - if any- is needed.
