Hello, everyone,
I wanted to invite you as theatre educators (a role I held not so long ago!) to a free Professional Learning Experience (PLE, or, webinar) on the new musical "Allegiance and Asian American/Pacific Islander Representation in Musical Theatre," set to be broadcast live at 5:30 EST on Thursday, October 21st.
Allegiance is a musical passion-project initiated by George Takei. The storyline is based on Takei's own experience as a young child in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II.
The PLE has two segments:
- The first will be a short discussion chaired by me with Greg Watanabe (Mike Masoto in Allegiance) and the director Stafford Arima. Questions for Greg and Stafford can be submitted before the broadcast.
- The second will be a teaching demo of an Allegiance-based lesson.
Additionally, and because I know many of you are in after-school rehearsals, the PLE will be available on-demand after the broadcast on Oct. 21. The discussion will be student-facing, so you can opt to play it for your students as a stand-alone or in support of your teaching of
Allegiance. A Certificate of Attendance is also available.
Personally, I have welcomed the opportunity to think through the ways in which musical theatre as a form can put forward this affirming, historically based musical of one AAPI experience in America.
To sign up for access to the PLE, the
Allegiance Teaching Guide, and to the streaming, full production of
Allegiance now (pre-webinar!), please go
here. You are welcome to contact me directly for further information.
